A considered notebook
A collection of small, quietly transformative ideas gathered from reference rooms in Sydney, Kyoto and Milan. Not a design manifesto — more a notebook you can return to.

Twelve ideas, in no particular order
Some are architectural. Some are ten-minute changes. All of them survived the walk home.
- 01
Move the downlight
Never place a downlight directly over the tub. Move it to the perimeter. The room instantly reads warmer, and the bath ritual gains its own light.
- 02
Pre-warm the tub
A short run of hot water into the empty bath before you fill it. The porcelain holds heat ten minutes longer.
- 03
A single stone tray
One tray at the side of the tub. Glass, oil, folded book. Nothing else on the ledge.
- 04
Warmer than 2700K
The colour temperature to aim for is 2400–2700K. The single most decisive lighting change in a luxury bathroom.
- 05
One rail, well made
One brushed-brass rail, thin and low, warming a heavy linen wrap. Replaces three towel hooks.
- 06
A bench in the room
A small wooden bench or stool inside the bathroom. The room learns to be visited, not passed through.
- 07
The hidden charger
Move the phone charger to another room, permanently. The bathroom recovers overnight.
- 08
Recessed storage
Storage in the wall, not on it. The eye stops working to filter out clutter.
- 09
One long stretch of empty wall
Every luxury bathroom holds one wall that does nothing. It is the room's inhale.
- 10
The hydrogen appliance
Bath One™ at the side of the tub. A small, matte object that quietly enriches the water — one considered object more, no visual weight.
- 11
The candle you actually use
One low candle within reach of the tub. Cheap or expensive — the point is that it is lit.
- 12
One less thing
The final idea is negative. Whatever the room holds, take one thing out. The room almost always improves.
“The final idea is negative. Take one thing out. The room almost always improves.”

Considered answers
- Which idea gives the fastest lift?
- Almost always the lighting. Warm, dimmable bulbs at 2400–2700K, no downlight over the tub, and a single low pendant nearby. The room changes in an evening.
- Are these ideas expensive?
- Most are not. Some — a stone tub, a full lighting rewire — are. Many households build the room over a season, one small idea at a time.
- Where does hydrogen bathing fit?
- As one more considered object in a well-edited room. Bath One™ is a small appliance that lives at the side of the tub and adds no visual weight to the space.
