    High-intensity training increases mitochondrial oxygen consumption significantly. The electron transport chain produces superoxide (O₂·⁻) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) as normal byproducts — in controlled amounts these participate in muscle adaptation signalling.

Taper protocol integration.

The pre-competition taper presents a specific recovery challenge. Training volume reduces systematically — frequency, duration and intensity all step back — but the accumulated oxidative debt from the preceding training block does not resolve overnight.
