Safety advisory
Dissolution is the delivery mechanism — and the exposure pathway
Commercial magnesium powder is refined from ore and specified by grade, not guaranteed as absolute purity. Because a tablet cannot generate hydrogen without releasing its own material, trace elements carried in the feedstock, unreacted fines, acid salts and excipients all enter the water. There is no membrane, filter or separation stage between the source material and the user.
- Trace elements travel with the raw metal; grades differ between industrial, food and pharmaceutical feedstock.
- Composition is only as consistent as the powder lot, acid lot and press conditions behind it.
- Certificates of analysis, where published, state limits per lot — a limit is a threshold, not a zero.
- Where no lot-level testing is published, the composition of the residue is unknown to the buyer.
What remains in the water after the reaction
Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)₂
The primary reaction product and only sparingly soluble, which is why tablet water turns cloudy and a fine white film settles on glassware, bath surfaces and pump inlets.
Unreacted magnesium particulates
Pressed tablets rarely react to completion. Metallic fines and partially reacted cores remain suspended, then settle as measurable turbidity unrelated to dissolved hydrogen.
Acidulants and their salts
The organic acid driving the reaction remains as dissolved malate, tartrate or fumarate salts, shifting the water's mineral profile away from its baseline.
Binders, lubricants and fillers
Stearates, celluloses and silicas are tabletting necessities. They are inert to the hydrogen reaction and simply disperse into the bath or glass.
Why heavy-metal questions arise at all
Refining carries trace elements
Magnesium is refined from ore. Depending on grade and process, feedstock can carry trace levels of other metallic elements which are never removed by the tablet-pressing process.
Batch-to-batch variability
Contract manufacturers, white-label suppliers and powder lots change over time. Every change is a variable in what ends up in the water.
Disclosure is voluntary
Some manufacturers publish lot-level certificates of analysis; many do not. Practice across the category is uneven.
The exposure scales with dose
Bath-volume dosing multiplies the reactive mass by orders of magnitude compared with a 250 mL glass — and multiplies everything the pellet carries with it.
Why tablets are unsuitable for bath volumes
Volume amplification
A drinking glass is roughly 250 mL; a domestic bath is 150–250 L. Reaching a meaningful concentration by tablet would require a proportionally enormous mass of reactive material.
Residue scales with the dose
Scale the tablets and you scale magnesium hydroxide, particulates, acid salts and binders in exactly the same proportion.
Output is a burst, not a plateau
Bath immersion is a sustained 20–40 minute exposure, while a tablet peaks early and decays as a large open surface outgasses continuously.
No measurement, no control
There is no instrumentation, flow rate or setpoint with a consumable — output cannot be verified or held.
How SPE/PEM electrolysis avoids the issue
Membrane separation
A solid polymer electrolyte / proton exchange membrane splits purified water and separates the hydrogen stream from oxygen at the membrane.
Nothing is consumed into the water
No pellet, no acidulant, no binder. The feed is purified water and electricity, so no reaction residue can form.
Verified output purity
The gas stream can be sampled and laboratory-tested — Hydrogen Wellness™ systems are specified at 99.99% hydrogen purity.
Continuous, controlled production
Electrolysis runs for the duration of a session at a specified flow rate, replacing hydrogen as it outgasses.
Tablets vs SPE/PEM machines: safety and purity criteria
| Criterion | Magnesium tablets | SPE/PEM machines |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen source | Magnesium–water reaction | SPE/PEM electrolysis of purified water |
| Purity | Variable; depends on feedstock grade | Measured and consistent (99.99%) |
| Residue in water | Yes — intrinsic to the mechanism | None |
| Trace-element exposure | Whatever the pellet carries | No material added to the water |
| Bath suitability | Low | High |
| Inhalation suitability | Not designed for inhalation | Designed for inhalation |
| Commercial use | Recurring cost and residue management | Suitable for spa and clinic duty |
| Long-term cost | Recurring consumable | One-time equipment purchase |
Format scoring: tablets vs SPE/PEM machines
Scores are an editorial 0–10 assessment of each format against the criterion, based on the chemistry and engineering described above.
