Cloudiness is the reaction working, not the reaction failing
Suppliers commonly describe white sediment and milky water as normal. That description is accurate — and it confirms that solid material is being released into the water. In bath volumes the same residue is deposited on tub surfaces, jets, pump inlets and drains.
- Magnesium hydroxide is only sparingly soluble, so it stays suspended and then settles.
- Turbidity is not a measure of dissolved hydrogen — the two are unrelated.
- Residue load scales linearly with the reactive mass needed for larger volumes.
What the residue actually is
Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)₂
The dominant reaction product. Above its solubility limit it remains as fine suspended solids — the milky appearance — before settling as a white film.
Unreacted magnesium fines
Pressed powder rarely reacts to completion. Metallic fines and partially reacted cores add turbidity that has nothing to do with hydrogen.
Acid salts
The acidulant becomes dissolved magnesium malate, tartrate or fumarate, altering the water's dissolved-solids profile.
Excipients
Binders, lubricants and flow agents such as stearates, celluloses and silicas are inert to the reaction and disperse unchanged.
Where residue causes practical problems
Bath surfaces and fixtures
Fine hydroxide film settles on acrylic, stone and chrome, and needs manual cleaning after each treated bath.
Jets, pumps and inlets
Circulating systems draw particulates into components never designed to handle a suspended-solids load.
Commercial turnover
Spa rooms running several sessions per day inherit a cleaning task per session, plus consumable storage and handling.
Verification
Because turbidity is unrelated to dissolved hydrogen, visible activity gives operators no usable feedback about concentration.
Why electrolysis leaves nothing behind
No material is added
The feed is purified water and electricity. With no pellet, acidulant or binder entering the water, there is nothing to precipitate.
Oxygen is separated at the membrane
The proton exchange membrane keeps the hydrogen stream separate, so only hydrogen reaches the bath or cannula.
Water chemistry is unchanged
Dissolved molecular hydrogen is a neutral gas; the source water's pH and mineral profile are left as they were.
Maintenance is scheduled, not per-session
Servicing is filter and resin replacement on an interval, not residue cleaning after every use.
